Now that was a tour de force! Texans no longer have an excuse for drinking crap beer.
Lee - great article. I dearly miss Guytown IPA too, but Live Oak's Liberation , their new gentler IPA, and Billy's all make good IPAs to keep me happy. I'm anxiously waiting for 512 brewing - will they ever brew?
According to the blog on the (512) website, they've already started brewing, but apparently don't have anything in stores yet.
The Real Ale Full Moon Pale Rye is incredibly unique, and it's one the rare beers I like just as much from the bottle as from the tap. I definitely would place it above the Fireman's 4 as something else to "Drink this instead."
As far as wheat beers go, the Freestyle is very similar to many popular Kristall Weissbiere (clear [filtered] wheat beer) in Germany. They're harder to find in the States, but definitely try to locate some popular German Kristall Weissbiere.
Lee: Loved the article and agreed with almost all of your "drink instead" recommendations. Note that there's another new brewery in operation -- Franconia Brewing. Also, they'll be brewing Saint Arnold Divine Reserve No. 7 tomorrow (based on an Austin resident's winning homebrew recipe) and it's expected to be out in September or October (in time for them to enter in the pro-am category of the Great American Beer Festival in early October).
Dan: Yeah, I included Franconia in the draft I sent to my editors (it was supposed to be in the "Yet to Cross My Tastebuds" section) but somehow it didn't make it into print. Unfortunately, editing errors occur in this business.
