Movie Theater Brewpub to Open in Round Rock

If you're a movie buff, even outside of Austin, you've probably heard of Alamo Drafthouse, the movie theater that serves you food and drinks (including craft beer) while you watch the show. The Austin chain is pretty famous, including getting named best movie theater in America by Entertainment Weekly. Well now, a group of investors is taking on Alamo on their home turf, but with a twist: The new Flix Brewhouse in Round Rock (an Austin suburb) will not only serve craft beer, they're also going to brew their own. Press release below, and yes, I noticed they don't identify their brewmaster. I'm looking into it.

(UPDATE: Flix sent me an e-mail stating, "
Flix Brewhouse is proud to welcome Justin Rizza on board as our Brewmaster. Formerly at Independence Brewing, Justin was the man behind their Saison, Stash IPA, and Killshot Scotch Ale.")

Flix Brewhouse Sneak Peek

Debuts with Transformers 3

ROUND ROCK, TX ‐ Flix Brewhouse by Galaxy, the only first run movie theatre in the world with a working microbrewery, opens this Wednesday [June 29th] at 6:00 pm with the Steven Spielberg blockbuster Transformers: Dark of the Moon and Sony Pictures’ Bad Teacher. The popularly‐priced new cinema anchors the Sky Ridge Plaza community lifestyle center at the northwest corner of IH‐35 and Hesters Crossing, exit 251 in Round Rock.

A joint effort of Los Angeles‐based Galaxy Theatres and a local investment group, Flix Brewhouse will first operate in “Sneak Peek” mode with the best in projection and sound, 42 draft beers, an extensive wine list, and traditional snacks. The full‐service kitchen, helmed by noted local chef Scott Reed, will be in full swing for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows 2 on July 15 and the first tastings from the brewhouse are slated for mid‐August.

Flix was designed to deliver in‐theatre three of adult America’s greatest loves – craft beer, great food and the latest hit movies. All six of Flix’s stadium seating “dining rooms” are outfitted with the latest high‐definition digital cinema projection and sound technologies, wall‐to‐wall curved screens, cushy high back chairs and the innovative Easy Glider moveable table top.

The microbrewery, run by the former head brewer of a renowned Texas craft brewery, will brew a selection of 6 to 8 beers ranging from its signature golden ale to seasonal specials like “Round Rock Red.” The Flix Mix lobby bar and cafe is open seven days a week, no ticket required, and auditoriums are available for daytime rental and special presentations.

About Off-Centered Film Fest

The OCFF (Off-centered Film Fest) features 'off-centered films for off-centered people'! We heartily believe in the DIY-grassroots-david-beats-goliath approach. And now we want to give independent-minded, aspiring filmmakers the chance to let their own freak-flags fly by making their own films that celebrate the perseverance of the underdog! We want to incorporate as many different, individual, vignettes of the 'little engines that could' into the world of Dogfish Head and we want to celebrate filmmakers whose visions jibe with our own. In addition to the copious booty we will lay on first-through-third place annual winners, we will show many of the competition submissions online and in our pubs and breweries as well. Our goal is to build a short film competition that is as far from the mainstream as our 90 Minute I.P.A. is from mainstream beer. So what are you waiting for? Crack open a cold one, pour it into a nice snifter, and let it come up to cellar temperature while you storyboard. Sip. Brainstorm. Sip again. Write dialogue. Sip again. Cast. Sip. Make that film. Good luck. Cheers.

About Dogfish Head Craft Brewery

When Sam Calagione opened Dogfish Head in 1995 it was the smallest commercial brewery in America making 10 gallons of beer at a time. Today Dogfish Head is among the fastest growing breweries in the country. Dogfish Head has focused on brewing stronger, more exotic beers since the day it opened as the motto “Off-centered ales for off-centered people” attests to. Dogfish Head has grown into a 120 person company with a restaurant/brewery/distillery in Rehoboth Beach and a production brewery in Milton, Delaware, selling beer in 31 states and three countries. Sam authored “Brewing up a Business” and “Extreme Brewing,” co-authored “He Said Beer, She Said Wine,” and is the host of the Discovery Channel series, Brew Masters. He lives in Lewes, Delaware, with his wife Mariah and children, Sammy and Grier.

TWO Allagash Tastings Next Monday

IMPORTANT UPDATE (Sent in by the Alamo Drafthouse Lake Creek; not sure what this means for the Flying Saucer tasting):

the alamo lake creek event tonight has been postponed due to the injury of Owner/Head Brewer (and host of the event) Rob Tod. While delivering a keg in Boston Rob took a nasty spill and broke his hand. It's important to know that this accident was only alcohol related in the sense that Rob was delivering a keg. Fortunately, we are still lucky enough to have Mr. Tod out for a tasting, we just need to wait roughly 6 weeks for him to recuperate. I apologize for the inconvenience. We will be refunding tickets within the next few days and everyone who purchased tickets in advance will be the first to know when this is rescheduled. We wish Rob a quick recovery.

Allagash is a mighty fine brewery in Portland, Maine ("the other Portland") specializing in Belgian-style ales. I guess they're trying to raise their profile here in Texas, because on Feb. 2, they're having not one but two tastings here — accompanied by some fine-sounding food, to boot.

Tasting Numero Uno:

The Alamo Drafthouse Lake Creek is proud to present our latest beer tasting event. Join us on Monday February 2nd, 5pm, as we take a stroll through Allagash’s righteous catalogue of beer. The event will feature a selection of Allagash brews paired with assorted appetizers and set against a backdrop of amusing old-school beer commercials. In addition to this, we will have a secret special guest speaker from Portland, Maine who knows “everything there is to know about Allagash beer and their brewery.” Tickets are now available via www.drafthouse.com. The cost is $40 and includes admission, beer and appetizer pairings. The Alamo Drafthouse Lake Creek is located at 13729 Research Blvd in Austin Texas.

Beers and food featured will include:
White- served w/ Green chili crab corn fritter

Dubbel- served w/ Mushroom cap stuffed with mozzarella, pepperoni, and bread crumbs

Tripel- served w/ Stilton and tripel pate a choux stuffed with beef tenderloin and balsamic reduction

Curieux- served w/ Jim Beam post oak smoked pork ribs

Odyssey- served w/ Almond milk ice cream

Musette- served w/ Bitter chocolate banana bread pudding

Tasting Numero Dos:

The Flying Saucer Draught Emporium will present a beer tasting featuring Portland, Maine-based Allagash Brewing Company on Monday, Feb. 2 from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at its location at 815 W. 47th St.

The event will be hosted by brewery president and founder Rob Tod and will pair five of Allagash’s beers with small plates. Featured beers will include classic Allagash brews the White and the Tripel, as well as the barrel-aged Curieux, Odyssey and Musette.

Tickets are available at The Flying Saucer and are $40 for the general public and $35 for U.F.O. Club members. Space is limited, so purchasing tickets in advance is recommended.

The Alamo Drafthouse showed Snakes on a Plane the other night, and were serving this. Damn I love those guys.
