Draft Mag has printed its 2012 list of the 100 Best Beer Bars in America. Congrats to the Texas entries on the list: Draught House, Flying Saucer, Ginger Man, and Little Woodrow's.But I'd love to whip up some controversy: Are there any deserving Texas establishments that they missed?
Saint Arnold Brewing will hold its first-ever Austin Pub Crawl on Feb. 19. Craft Austin has the details.
And on Feb. 27, the new Beer Connoisseur magazine will promote the release of its second issue with a big shindig at Independence Brewing, with a pre- and post-party at the Ginger Man (including a shuttle to and from the brewery). Click on the image for info, or go to http://www.beerconnoisseur.com/issue-two-release-party.
UPDATE: Amy from Independence tells me: "We've invited all the other area breweries to bring their beers over to the brewery for the event for a beer tasting fest. So far we have commitments from: Real Ale, Saint Arnold, Live Oak, 512 Brewing, North by Northwest, and Uncle Billy's."
Scooped by Texas Beer again: Paul is reporting that the Austin Ginger Man has found a new location right around the corner from the current location, which is due to be demolished in about six months.
Here's some bad news, although it could have been worse. I heard a rumor that the Ginger Man, one of Downtown's coolest bars and an utterly magnificent (effcellent?) beer bar will be shut down and replaced with condos. Turns out it's true. The change is not too immediate – their lease doesn't run out until April 2009 – but ugh. I'm all for densifying Downtown and encouraging people to live there instead of the sprawling suburbs, but isn't part of the deal to also have great ground-floor retail? So why can't some of that ground floor stuff include great brewpubs/beer bars? I'm told that the cool old building is to be demolished; I'm still looking into that, and plan to report on it for the Chronicle.
But here's the good news, or at least the not-quite-so-bad news: The Ginger Man company plans to stay in business in Austin (they also have locations in Houston, Dallas, and Fort Worth). The manager told me they are looking for another location, hopefully downtown.
